BROKENNESS
Brokenness, a word weighed down by negative connotations, through these 6 images I want to express to the viewer all the areas of what brokenness really means, and looks like. Brokenness is a season in life, that has brought so much growth to me personally. Being broken is a very pivotal place in everyones life, whether the outcome is positive or negative.
As I have created these images I will have incorporated hands in each picture, since hand's are the tools that bring life to our thoughts and intentions. Each photo has been drawn in black and white, to show the simplicity of brokenness.
And finally there are objects in each photo identifying the types of brokenness, both the physical and emotion aspects.

TORN
To be torn, it is something outside of yourself that is tearing you apart. And it takes something outside of yourself to put yourself back together. The hands are already occupied with themselves, when something bigger than themselves is the reason for the strain. To be torn, is not always to be broken, it is freedom. The freedom that comes from being torn, gives room to then be put back together by something much greater than yourself.
CRACKED
Cracked is being damaged and showing lines on the surface from having split without coming apart. The hands are grasping and holding onto something that seems to be capable of support, another human, a sign of vulnerability that they are becoming dependent upon. When in reality it's a false hope, empty and incapable of supporting another's anxiety, that has brought them to cling in the first place. Being cracked isn't something to be fearful of, it's something to identify, so it can be then filled.
LOST
The definition of Lost is unable to find one's way or not knowing one's whereabouts. To realize one is lost they must identify that there is something to be found by. It seems like there's confusion and misdirection within what the hand is grasping towards and where it's been and going towards. A maze of confusion, As they try to feel their way out of it. Everything seems to be in the light, but it looks as if the hand was blind, meaning whether it's in the light or not is vanity. Something outside of it has to guide and direct this hand rather than the independence it's searching for in vain.
TWISTED
Twisted, means to be forced out of its natural or proper shape. We were created to be dependent so as the hands cling to themselves they are pursuing the unnatural idea of "independence". The hands belong to the same body, but cling to each other to achieve security, comfort, balance, within themselves. But in reality they are misshaping themselves into something unnatural, they are twisting what they were originally created and designed for. Twisted thoughts, that lead to twisted actions, in the pursuit of trying not to be broken. |
BENT
To be bent, is to be created in a natural form, but events of small or large, exterior or interior force, makes things to be warped or bent. If the natural element was delicate and dependent, the moment the hands decided to achieve independence and strength they were bent. But to be bent isn't to be useless, or to be inferior, it just creates a vulnerability to hurt and injury. By disregarding the natural we are depending on the natural protection we receive through something so much greater than ourselves. But the moment we view ourselves as the greatest strength we reveal our greatest weakness.
PULLED
To be pulled is to have a force be exerted upon (someone or something), typically by taking hold of them, in order to move or try to move them toward oneself or the origin of the force. This is the never ending battle of being pulled towards something outside of yourself or pulling away from that source. These hands show a confusion of pulling towards and away from each other. The dispute of dependence and independence, the war or pulling to and from. Peace is impossible when neither are willing to submit. A battle that will never be solved by our own two hands, that pull at each other.
